We provide a full suite of arboricultural services and solutions, from large established heritage trees to smaller fruit tree pruning.
Our personalised service means our clients come to us through repeat business and personal recommendation. They stay with us because they can rely on an excellent service every time; delivered with a personal touch.
We are health and safety compliant approved contractors to both the Nelson City Council and Tasman District Council and are proud members of the New Zealand Arboricultural Association.
Richard Walsh
Director & Qualified Arborist
Introduced to the industry by his brother, being an arborist is in Richard’s blood. His career began in 1996 after completing his Certificate in Arboriculture from Telford Rural Polytechnic. Richard went on to work for Wellington City Council and subsequently spent five years working in London, where he became an expert in crown reductions and the removal of trees in confined spaces.
Richard spent three years as an executive board member of NZARB and is an industry approved trainer.
Richard established his own business after returning to New Zealand in 2007, and has worked hard to develop Nelson Tree Specialists into the region’s leading arboriculture company, alongside his wife Louise and burgeoning team of tree technicians.
I love passing on my knowledge of pruning, confined tree removals and climbing techniques to our team of arborists. I might not be on the tools as much these days, but I’m committed to guiding our guys every step of the way.

Why choose NTS
An Arborist, by definition, is an individual who is trained in the art and science of planting, removing, caring for and maintaining trees. Hiring an arborist should not be taken lightly.
Proper tree care can add considerable value and appeal to your property. Poorly maintained trees can be a liability. Pruning or removing trees can be dangerous work and should only be done by those trained and equipped to work safely in trees.
Call us today for further information about any of our services and to arrange for a free consultation and/or quotation.
Health & Safety Plan
Tree work is inherently dangerous; we deal with heavy machinery and chainsaws while working at heights. So it is extremely important to us that every possible step is taken to keep our team safe. We have a detailed and up-to-date Health and Safety plan to effectively manage any risks and we carry out regular Health and Safety meetings and training sessions with our staff.
Our daily tool box meetings identify the hazards for each job and we complete Hazard Identification forms in accordance with Health and Safety plan. Our team have the appropriate protective clothing, modern climbing equipment and our arborists are fully trained in aerial rescue techniques.
Further information on our Health and Safety Plan is available on request.
